Ensia Magazine is a non-profit, environmental publication housed at the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment. They deliver incredible stories on environmental solutions in action and give voice to climate progress. I was a part of this “micro-newsroom” from 2017 until 2021 as graphic designer and illustrator.

I designed assets and for the magazine’s brand as well as for specific, media-rich articles. Additionally, I sourced all imagery published during that time period either from stock sources, direct contact, or by facilitating freelance photographer/illustrator relationships.

I helped produce over 300 articles including stories for the Ensia collections project and the media-rich platform Ensia Edge. I also personally created 36 editorial illustrations for the op ed section of the magazine.

Hot Spots

Online Journalism Award | 2018 Finalist
Category: Feature, Small Newsroom

An excerpt from the online journalism award entry:

“Each hot spot forms a separate chapter and is accompanied by photos, illustrations, videos, charts, number callouts and other complementary content that illustrates and expands on the narrative. These design assets — along with “social cards” featuring quotes from the story — were used as stand-alone pieces on social media to further engage readers in a discussion about climate change impacts.

Taken as a whole, this engaging, in-depth story brings to life climate impacts happening right now across the globe.”

From Rust to Resilience

Article designed as part of a year long series on drinking water. I created the Rust to Resilience branding that all the partner outlets used. I also illustrated the main article illustration.

This article is part of the Pulitzer Center’s nationwide Connected Coastlines reporting initiative. For more information, go to pulitzercenter.org/connected-coastlines-initiative.
